Toilet Etiquette
in the Bush
You have just arrived at a fabulous campsite after an enjoyable trip through our great
natural environment. As you look around to select the spot for your tent you are dismayed to see used toilet paper left lying
around by the previous visitor.
Unfortunately, this scenario has become an all too often occurrence, and all because
some people do not respect the environment enough to dispose of their waste properly. One can only guess that they would not
do this in their own backyard so why do they do it in ours?
These are some simple guidelines that everyone can use
to ensure that none of us has to put up with unsightly mess.
- In sensitive areas use toilet facilities provided or carry and use a portable
chemical type toilet.
- If no facilities exist at your campsite select a toilet site well away
from the camping area and watercourses.
- Always carry a shovel/spade and dig a hole deep enough to allow at least
150mm of earth cover when replaced.
- For fire safety reasons do not burn toilet paper.
- If using disposable nappies always carry soiled nappies out to a proper
waste facility - do not bury disposable nappies or dispose of them in a campfire.
- If you do find scattered waste at a campsite take the time to dispose
of it properly so that everyone can enjoy the site free of waste.
Above all, remember that you should leave your campsite in the
same condition as you would like to arrive at.
TRAVELLING ON GUNBAREL HIGHWAY
WARNING:
This track covers some very remote areas.
It is NOT a journey to be undertaken lightly. It is long and you have to be TOTALLY self-sufficient. It is 4WD only. Allow
600 kms minimum fuel range. Make sure that someone carries a working High Frequency (RFDS) radio. Take 2 spare wheels and
the means to repair punctures. Let someone responsible know you are on the highway and when you expect to be in civilisation.
If you are late, they can initiate a search. Make sure they know you have completed the crossing.
